Rachael Pirner elected as American Bar Association State Delegate for the State of Kansas Rachael Pirner, TWG Litigation Attorney, has been elected to serve as the American Bar Association (ABA) State Delegate for the State of Kansas. She is currently serving as the interim State Delegate and will begin her three-year term in August. Kelly appoints Rachael Pirner to Kansas Senior Care Task Force TWG Attorney Rachael Pirner has been appointed by Governor Laura Kelly to serve as elder law attorney for the Kansas Senior Care Task Force. Pirner’s appointment to the Task Force was announced on July 1, 2021. The job of the Task Force is to consider policy that will affect elder law issues and to study the well-being of Kansas seniors. The Task Force will also review state statutes, policies, and programs, and report on improvements and recommended changes to these areas. Pirner comes to the Task Force bringing 33 years of experience as an elder law attorney. TWG attorneys obtain federal jury verdict against scammers TWG Business & Commercial Litigation Attorneys James Walker and Shane Rosson won a federal jury court case in which their client was awarded $3.25 million in punitive damages and $182,600 in actual damages. The jury rendered its verdict on July 1, 2021. The TWG attorneys’ client was an independent oil and gas operator from Harvey County, Kansas, and has been in business for over 50 years. The defendants were from Southern California and the New York City area. Before victimizing TWG’s client, the defendants had previously scammed domestic companies in the energy sector more than 50 times. The defendants conspired in falsely promising to finance North American energy projects in exchange for brokerage fees and short-term loan proceeds purporting to use sovereign bonds issued by a South American nation as collateral. TWG Welcomes Summer Law Clerks TWG recently welcomed Summer Law Clerks Piper Hampton and John Ralston to the team. Hampton is from Norman, Oklahoma, and attends the University of Oklahoma College of Law. Ralston is a Wichita native and attends Washburn University School of Law. Both will be third-year law students in the fall. As law clerks, Hampton and Ralston assist TWG attorneys with various projects, such as drafting documents and researching legal issues. “It just depends on the type of law and the type of attorney that comes up to you,” Hampton said. “But you’re not limited to just one type of work here; you get everything.” Hampton said the opportunity to intern with TWG grabbed her interest because she wanted to branch out of Oklahoma. TWG attorney gets third article published in the Journal of Accountancy TWG’s Estate and Tax Attorney Matthew Schippers has had his third article published in the Journal of Accountancy. The journal published Schippers’ article, “Court holds refund claims were not duly filed,” in the Tax Matters section of its April/May 2021 Issue. In the article, Schippers analyzed a case decided by the Court of Federal Claims in which the married plaintiffs, Mr. George P. Brown and Mrs. Ruth Hunt-Brown, were denied tax-refund claims from 2015 and 2017 because they failed to sign their amended tax returns of those respective years. Schippers found the Brown case noteworthy in analyzing the requirements for refund claims and reached out to the Journal of Accountancy’s editor of Tax Matters to propose summarizing the case. Schippers has previously written articles summarizing cases for the Journal of Accountancy, including “Tax
